The book begins with a journal of his eighth trip to Alaska at age 79, riding a 650cc dual sport motorcycle - basically a dirt bike, during which he survived a high-speed collision with a Stone's sheep on the Alaska Highway. The following year he was struck down by a combination of Lyme disease and ehrlichiosis that attacked his central nervous system and more than doubled the physical maladies and pain with which he was already coping. The book contains journals of several long trips that he took as an octogenarian, exemplifying his strong determination to continue riding for as long as he is able.

I really enjoyed reading of Piet's escapades on his motorcycle. I can see how he's racked up over 1,250,000 miles over the years as hardly a month goes by and he's on the road to some far off place. His descriptions are good and he peppers his stories by recollecting people he's met along the way.A good read for anyone interested in motorcycling, particularly those getting on in years. He's an inspiration.

Planning on taking a motorcycle trip to Alaska in a few years at the age of 65. If he can do it in his 80's, I should be able to do it in my 60's.
Liked the book a lot - can't wait to practice what he preaches. Would recommend this book to anyone who likes to ride.
I have met Piet Boonstra and have competed with him in the Crotona Midnight Run a few times. He is definately one of a kind and tells a great story. If you are planning a long distance ride, you should read this and his other books. If you think you are tough, you better read this too. Piet is the real deal.
There's not a lot books about motorcycle adventures, so I'm always excited to find a new one. Piet's recent book got my pulse up when I saw it mentioned on a bike forum. When it arrived and I thumbed the pages to see pics and was amazed at the few that were included, but really disappointed with their quality.
I'm guessing this was a self produced book, which should have been a two part magazine feature. A plus for the book is that he explains how much more costly an Alaskan adventure is. Fuel, food, and lodging are triple of what you find in the lower 48, with the quality being sub par.
Another disappointment was the book not being available in electronic format. I passed my copy on, for free, asking that others did the same, on a internet bike forum.
